Sturdiness and durability are probably two qualities that are universally regarded as essential when it comes to a vacuum cleaner. So, you might think a cardboard one would be a nonstarter. But not so.

 

Most people view urine as an unpleasant waste product to be flushed out of sight and out of mind as quickly as possible, but UK scientists have recently discovered that we might be sending a valuable commodity down the drain.

 

How much litter do you reckon is dropped on the streets of Westminster every day? Given that the council provides 1,500 residual waste bins and 300 recycling bins, it can’t be very much, can it?

 

It’s safe to say that neon, puff-ball sleeves and cat suits all come under the ‘fashion statement’ umbrella. Adding to this eccentric and eclectic style category, two brothers from San Francisco have designed wooden ties.

 

What makes a good on-street municipal bin? Prime location? Sure. Emptied often enough to prevent overflowing? Of course. Ability to speak? Perhaps not.

 

A nappy-eating mushroom: it sounds like a cross between an infant zombie horror film and one of David Attenborough’s specials. However, as bizarre as it may seem, they do exist!

 

Glamorous camping in the city? There’s at least one paradox in there. But if you find yourself heading to the German capital of Berlin then it might be worth considering a visit to Hüttenpalast (German for ‘hut place’, FYI) in Neukölln.

 

The waste industry suffers from no shortage of awards and, especially this time of year, we seem to have plenty of opportunities to pause for a nice pat on the back. Is there really room for another award?

 

Making something useful out of a waste material is nearly always a wonderful thing to do, but you might just draw the line at making bioplastic from human waste.

 

In a Montreal mall, a plastic bottle was ostentatiously placed on the ground. When an unsuspecting passerby picked it up and placed it in a recycling container, nearly everyone in the shopping centre donned a red cap and applauded furiously
